Let’s Move!
By Hilary Garbon, MD, FAAP, IBCLC, Pediatric Alliance — Northland
Let’s Move Pittsburgh is a great local organization that strives to raise awareness about the benefits of healthy foods, increased exercise, and decreased screen time in kids. Their goal is to improve the overall health of all kids in southwestern PA through education, school campaigns, and family fitness events. Their family fitness classes are free and vary between yoga, high intensity interval training (HIIT), and Zumba. Kids of all ages are welcome and encouraged to attend.
I recently tried out their family yoga class on the lawn of Phipps Conservatory. My husband, 2-year-old son and 4-year-old son came along for the fun. The class was run by a certified yoga teacher and the setting was beautiful. It was an hour-long class and perfect for beginners. No one seemed to mind that my kids were running around and climbing all over the place while we were trying to get our zen on.
Classes are held one Sunday a month from 9am-10 am. All classes are at Phipps Conservatory. Registration is required; it’s easy to sign up online here. Upcoming classes are listed below. Check them out and maybe I’ll see you at the next class in September!
September 10, 2017 — High Intensity Interval Training
November 12, 2017 — High Intensity Interval Training
December 10, 2017 — Zumba
January 7, 2018 — Zumba
And in case anyone was wondering how yoga with kids went, here is the expectation vs. reality!
Namaste!
